Drywall is a lightweight partition and ceiling system built by fixing plasterboard to a metal frame. It goes up far faster than block work, adds little load to the building and allows services to run inside it, which is also what makes concealed lighting possible.

What We Watch For
The details that decide the quality
Sound insulation lives inside the frame
A drywall partition on its own does not stop sound; the insulation placed in the frame cavity does the work. If you are dividing a bedroom or a meeting room, say so at the start, because adding it later means opening the wall again.
Wet areas need a different board
Standard board is not used in bathrooms and kitchens; a moisture-resistant type is. Skip that distinction and the board draws in damp and fails over time.
Tell us in advance about heavy fixings
If a television, cupboard or shelving is going on a drywall wall, support has to be built into the frame at that point. Once the wall is closed, that support cannot be added.

Are drywall partitions strong enough?
Built with the correct frame spacing they are perfectly sound in everyday use. Points that will carry weight need support built into the frame; once that is planned, televisions and cupboards hang without trouble.
Does a suspended ceiling make the room lower?
It lowers it somewhat, and by how much depends on the services running through it and the type of lighting. In a room with a low ceiling we measure this at the survey and tell you the exact figure, so there is no surprise.
How long does drywall work take?
Framing and boarding move quickly; what sets the pace is the drying time of the jointing and skim coats. Rushing that drying comes back as cracks once the paint is on.
