Frequently asked about exterior renovation
What preparation happens before exterior painting?
The surface is cleaned first, flaking paint is scraped back, cracks are filled and primer is applied. If this preparation is skipped the new paint comes away together with the old layer, so what determines the lifespan is the preparation rather than the paint itself.
How is rainwater drainage handled?
The surface is laid to a fall so that water is taken away from the building. Water standing on a terrace finds its way into the structure at the base of the wall and shows up inside as damp. That is why the drainage direction is set before the finish is chosen.
Is waterproofing necessary on a balcony?
If there is a flat below, yes. Without it water passes through the slab and stains the ceiling of the property underneath. Doing it while the covering is already up costs no extra breaking out, whereas doing it later means opening the floor again.
Which material suits an outdoor floor?
Anything used outside has to cope with freeze and thaw cycles. A covering made for interiors cracks outdoors after a couple of winters. Timber decking gives a warmer look and needs maintenance, outdoor porcelain needs none but the slip rating has to be checked.
What is the most common mistake in exterior work?
Going straight to the finish without preparing the surface. The second most common is laying a floor before planning the drainage, because standing water damages both the covering and the base of the wall.
What season is best for exterior renovation?
Spring through autumn is ideal for flooring and structural work. Planting timing depends on the species. We recommend the best schedule for you during the survey.
How long does an outdoor renovation take?
It depends on the scope. Re-laying a terrace floor typically takes 3 to 7 days, while a fuller exterior renovation including facade cladding and outdoor lighting runs 10 to 20 days. Weather affects the schedule directly outdoors. In wet spells, paving and painting have to wait.
Do you take on small gardens too?
Yes, we work at every scale, from balconies and small terraces to large villa gardens.
Do you also do garden design and irrigation?
Yes, but under a different heading. Turf, planting, automatic irrigation and garden lighting all sit within our Landscaping service. Exterior renovation covers the structural side, such as terraces, façades, flooring and pergolas. The two can of course be planned together.
How many years does exterior façade paint last?
It depends on the material used and how much sun and rain the façade is exposed to. We typically recommend weather-resistant façade paints that last around 8–12 years.
