External Wall Insulation
External wall insulation means fixing insulation boards to the outside of a building and closing them with render, reinforcing mesh and a finish coat. The purpose is to slow heat escaping in winter and heat entering in summer. Success rests on applying every layer in the right order rather than on one material.

What We Watch For
The details that decide the quality
Thermal bridges cannot be skipped
If insulation covers the large flat areas but stops short at window reveals and balcony junctions, heat keeps escaping through those points. The value of the work is decided by whether those details are handled.
Water details decide how long it lasts
If sills and reveals do not shed water properly, rain gets behind the insulation. That means a facade which bubbles and flakes a few years later.
In an apartment block it is a joint decision
Insulating a whole building requires a decision by the owners. Insulating a single flat is technically possible but limited in effect, and we say that openly rather than selling the idea.
FAQ
Frequently asked about external wall insulation
What board thickness is used?
Usually between 4 and 8 cm depending on the climate. Thicker boards improve performance, but window sills and reveals then have to be detailed to suit. We suggest a thickness based on the existing wall build-up.
Is scaffolding included?
Yes. Erecting and dismantling the scaffolding and removing the old render debris are all within scope. The entrance and common areas are protected throughout.
Can a single flat be insulated?
Technically yes, but thermal bridges continue through the neighbouring walls so the expected benefit is not fully achieved, and the elevation loses its visual consistency. We recommend it be done building-wide by decision of the owners.
What is the most common mistake?
Insulating over a wall that is still taking in water. Covering it hides the problem without solving it. The second is skipping the reveal and sill details, where the thermal bridge usually remains.
How long does external wall insulation take?
Facade area and the number of storeys decide it. Front and rear elevations of a five-storey building typically take 15 to 25 days. A single elevation or a small building runs 7 to 15 days. Weather matters directly. In rain or low temperatures the render and top coat have to wait, and forcing them leaves permanent marks on the facade.
Does external insulation genuinely help?
Applied correctly it reduces heat loss and keeps indoor temperatures steadier. How much difference it makes depends on the current state of the building, the thickness of insulation and how completely the work is done. Promising a fixed percentage would not be honest.
What time of year should it be done?
In dry, mild weather. Render and adhesive applied during heavy rain or in the cold will not reach the strength they should. We plan the schedule around that.
