What decides how long a floor lasts is the flatness of the subfloor rather than the covering chosen for it. Laid over a floor that was never levelled, laminate creaks underfoot, opens at the joints and lifts at the edges in time.

What We Watch For
The details that decide the quality
An expansion gap is always left
Laminate and wood-based floors move slightly with temperature and humidity. Without an expansion gap at the walls the covering eventually lifts in the middle. The gap is hidden by the skirting, so nothing shows.
Damp has to be checked first
Where there is moisture in the subfloor, a damp-proof membrane goes under the covering. Skip that step and the boards draw damp from below and swell at the edges, which is damage that cannot be undone.
Wet rooms need a different answer
Laminate is not suitable in bathrooms and kitchens where water is constant. Tiles or water-resistant vinyl belong there instead. We do not recommend a material that does not suit the room.

Frequently asked about laminate & vinyl flooring
How much expansion gap is left?
Usually 8 to 10 mm at the perimeter, hidden by the skirting. Laminate and LVT move with temperature and humidity, so this gap is essential. Long corridors and runs over eight metres take an intermediate expansion profile.
Laminate or LVT?
Laminate gives a timber look economically but has limited water resistance. LVT copes better in damp areas and is quieter underfoot, which is why it is preferred in kitchens and entrance halls.
Can it go over the existing floor?
If the existing surface is sound and level, some systems allow it, which removes the cost of breaking out. The floor level rises, so the gap under the doors is checked first.
What is the most common mistake?
Laying without checking that the base is level. The problem does not show in the first week; it appears months later as creaking and open joints.
How long does new flooring take?
Where the subfloor is level, laminate across a flat of around 100 sqm is laid in 1 to 2 days. If levelling is needed, add 1 to 2 days and wait for the screed to dry. With ceramic or porcelain, adhesive and grout curing push it to 3 to 5 days.
Can new flooring go over the old floor?
If the existing floor is flat, sound and dry, in most cases yes. But where the floor is uneven or the old covering has come loose, anything laid over it carries the same fault to the surface quickly. We decide by looking at the floor during the survey.
When can the floor be used after installation?
Laminate and click-system floors can be walked on as soon as fitting is finished. Glued installations need the adhesive to set, and we tell you that waiting time during the work.
Does the furniture have to be moved?
Yes, the area has to be clear. We can help with moving heavier pieces. We discuss that at the survey and build it into the plan.
