A roller shutter sits outside the window and, when lowered, blocks sun, heat and the view in from outside. A security shutter works on the same principle to close a commercial frontage, built stronger because its purpose is security. In both cases the system is chosen around how often it will be used.

The details that decide the quality
Motorised systems need power at the box
A motorised shutter needs an electrical supply run to the side of the box. During a renovation the wall is already open, so it is straightforward. Done afterwards it means chasing a channel into the wall. This is why the shutter decision belongs in the renovation plan.
The box takes up window height
The shutter box sits above the window and reduces the visible height of the glass a little. We look at that together when measurements are taken.
Security class matters on shutters
On commercial shutters, slat thickness and the locking system decide the level of security directly. For businesses with high-value window displays we discuss this at the start.

Frequently asked about roller shutters
Shutters or a security roller shutter?
Domestic shutters control light and privacy. A security roller shutter protects a shop when it is closed. They are built for different purposes, so the slat construction and motor sizing differ.
Motorised or manual?
On tall or wide openings a motor makes a noticeable difference to daily use. On small windows manual operation is enough. Whether the motor can be released manually during a power cut is also worth considering.
What is the most common mistake?
Ordering without measuring the space left above the opening for the box. The second is leaving the electrical supply until later, which means opening the wall a second time.
How long does fitting shutters take?
Production after measuring is usually 7 to 10 days. Fitting takes a single day for a home with a few windows, and likewise a day for one large opening such as a shopfront shutter. Where a motorised system needs a new power feed, add half a day.
Can my existing shutter be motorised?
In most cases yes. If the existing box and slats are suitable, the belt system comes out and a motor goes in. The size of the box and the weight of the slats decide it, so we open the box and check during the survey.
Do shutters provide insulation?
A closed shutter creates a pocket of air between the window and the outside, which reduces heat loss somewhat and blocks solar heat in summer. It does not replace insulated joinery, but alongside it the difference in comfort is clear.
When a shutter fails, repair or replace?
Motors, belts and individual slats can usually be replaced. A full system renewal is not needed for every fault. We diagnose the fault first and tell you honestly which one makes sense.
