Decking is an outdoor timber surface laid over a terrace or garden. A pergola is an open or partly covered shade structure. In both, what decides the lifespan is the supporting structure and the drainage beneath as much as the timber itself.

The details that decide the quality
The substructure matters more than the timber
The joists under a deck, and the air gap they create, let the timber breathe and stop water sitting underneath. Timber fixed straight onto the ground rots however good the material is.
Outdoor timber is not indoor timber
Timber used outside has to be treated to stand up to moisture and sunlight. Using indoor timber outdoors looks like a saving in the first year and needs replacing in the second.
We say up front that it needs maintenance
Natural timber decking needs a protective treatment at intervals. Without it the colour fades and the surface cracks. If you want something that asks for no maintenance, let us talk about the composite alternative and decide together which suits you.
FAQ
Frequently asked about timber decking & pergolas
Is a gap left between the deck boards?
Yes, generally 4 to 8 mm, because timber expands with moisture and water has to drain away. An air gap is also left beneath the deck, since timber in direct contact with the ground takes up moisture constantly and decays quickly.
What is the most common mistake?
Underestimating the substructure. However good the surface material is, if the frame and the drainage are not right the deck starts to move within a couple of seasons.
How long do decking and pergolas take?
A terrace deck of around 20 to 30 sqm is usually finished in 2 to 4 days, and a timber pergola in 2 to 5 days. Fixing the sub-frame and applying the protective finish are included. The finish needs drying time between coats, so that stage is never rushed.
Timber decking or composite?
Natural timber has the warmer look and texture but asks for regular maintenance. Composite is far easier to live with and fades less, though it does not fully reproduce the character of natural wood. We decide based on how you will use the terrace and how much time you want to spend on upkeep.
Is permission needed for a pergola?
It can depend on the structure, its size and local practice. Where a structure is permanent and encloses space, the municipality should be consulted. We do not give a ruling on this. We recommend confirming with your municipality before the work starts.
My decking is old. Does all of it need replacing?
Not always. If the joist substructure is sound, only the surface boards need renewing, which costs far less than a full rebuild. We check the substructure at the survey and tell you honestly which one is needed.
